How To Become a Referee – An
Invitation from the Head Referees
We would like to invite you to apply to
become a referee for the Western Onondaga Youth
Soccer Association (WOYSA). If you are at least 13
years old, this is a good opportunity to make some
money and to expand your experience with
recreational soccer in our area. Our season runs for
seven weeks each in spring and fall. Spring games
are played in May and June, fall in September and
October (U14 division is spring only).
We are looking for reliable, well-spoken individuals
who can make decisive calls on the field and have
the confidence to stand behind those calls. As a
referee, you should be willing and able to discuss
your actions on the field with coaches who request
clarification. If you feel you will handle yourself
with poise in a competitive game, then you are the
person for this position.
For many of you this will be your first employed
position. Along with that come the same duties and
responsibilities as any other job. But unlike most
jobs, if you are absent a full 50% of the work force
is gone. Even a referee with years of experience
cannot officiate as effectively as two. And given
that your primary responsibility is the safety of
the players, 100% attendance is crucial.
First year referees will be required to attend a
3-hour training and orientation session with at
least one parent there for the first 10-15 minutes.
Second year referees must attend a 1.5 hour on field
training session. Both sessions are scheduled this
year on April 22 from 9:00am – Noon, then from
1:00pm – 2:30pm at West Genesee Middle School.
Please make sure you are available…you can’t referee
without the training.
So please give due consideration to any other
commitments on those Saturdays before you apply. If
you plan on playing a varsity or J.V. sport or other
activity that requires Saturday practices you
probably shouldn’t apply. Also, if you are still
playing on a WOYSA team, you are likely to have
conflicts. In those instances you will either have
to miss your game as a player or find yourself a
substitute referee.
Now that you understand the expectations, hopefully
you have the dedication and commitment to become a
WOYSA referee.
THIS APPLICATION MUST BE IN THE MAIL NO LATER THAN MARCH 15.
Late applications will be considered for the sub
list only !!!
WE WILL BE FILLING THE ROSTER ON A FIRST COME
FIRST SERVE BASIS…..
This will allow me to schedule all refs for four or
five out of the seven Saturdays.
This means that there will be only approximately
50-60 slots on the roster, depending on division and
field scheduling.
