How To Become a Referee – An
Invitation from the Director of Referees
You are invited to apply to
become a referee for the Western Onondaga Youth
Soccer Association (WOYSA). If you are at least 13
years old, this is a good opportunity to earn some
money and to expand your experience with
recreational soccer in our area. Our season runs for
seven weeks each in the fall and spring. Fall games
are played in September and October and Spring games
are played in May and June.
We are looking for reliable, well-spoken individuals
who can make decisive calls on the field and have
the confidence to stand behind those calls. As a
referee, you should be willing and able to discuss
your actions on the field with coaches who request
clarification. If you feel you will handle yourself
with poise and confidence in a game situation, then you are the
person for this position.
For many of you this will be your first employed
position. Along with this position come duties and
responsibilities like any other job. But unlike most
other jobs, if you are absent from this job, 50% of the work force
is missing from the game. Even a referee with years of experience
cannot officiate as effectively as two. And, given
that your primary responsibility is the safety of
the players, 100% attendance is crucial.
First year referees will be required to attend a
3-hour training and orientation session with at
least one parent present for the first 10-15 minutes.
Second year referees must attend a 1.5 hour on field
training session. Training sessions are scheduled before the
the start of play in the fall. The time and location of the session will be determined
by the Director of Referees and communicated in advance.
If you do not attend a training and orientation session
you cannot referee.
Please give consideration to any other
commitments you have on Saturdays before you apply. If
you plan on playing a varsity or J.V. sport or other
activities that require Saturday participation you
should probably not apply. Also, if you are still
playing on a WOYSA team, you may also have a schedule
conflict. If that is the case you will either have
to miss your game as a player or find yourself a
substitute referee.
Now that you understand the expectations, hopefully
you have the dedication and commitment to become a
WOYSA referee.
This application should be completed and mailed as SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Later applications will be considered for the referee sub
list only !!!
WE WILL BE FILLING POSITIONS ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS…..
This will allow our Director of Referees to schedule all referees
for four or five out of the seven Saturdays.
This means that there will be only approximately
50-60 slots on the roster, depending on division and
field scheduling.
